/ Region Overview

Built for Pilbara conditions and operators.

The Pilbara hosts the largest concentration of heavy industry in Australia. Iron ore operations run by BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, Roy Hill and Hancock Prospecting move hundreds of millions of tonnes a year through Karratha, Port Hedland and Dampier. LNG operations, rail networks and supporting industrial bases mean the operational tempo is constant. The HSE expectations are correspondingly high.

Where we mobilise in the Pilbara

HSES consultants are FIFO/DIDO-ready and inducted to operate on every major Pilbara operator’s site. We routinely deliver to:

  • Karratha & Dampier — Rio Tinto operations, port facilities, LNG.
  • Port Hedland — BHP, Roy Hill, Fortescue port operations; world’s largest bulk export port.
  • Newman — BHP iron ore operations and supporting industrial base.
  • Tom Price & Paraburdoo — Rio Tinto iron ore operations.
  • Onslow — Wheatstone LNG and supporting infrastructure.
  • Roebourne — community and industrial interface work.

Pilbara-specific HSE risk profile

Pilbara operations carry a distinctive risk profile that shapes how we deliver services:

Heat stress and environmental exposure

Summer ambient temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Heat stress management is a critical control across drilling, maintenance and outdoor maintenance work. Our occupational health programs incorporate heat acclimation protocols, hydration management and shift-pattern review.

Cyclone and severe weather preparedness

The Pilbara cyclone season runs roughly November to April. Our emergency response work includes cyclone preparedness, pre-cyclone shutdown protocols and post-event re-entry procedures.

Iron ore dust and silica

Respirable dust and crystalline silica exposure remain critical for Pilbara mining and port operations. Our occupational health surveillance includes spirometry programs aligned to exposure profiles.

Distance and isolation

Many Pilbara operations are hundreds of kilometres from definitive medical care. Our emergency response work emphasises pre-hospital protocols, evacuation planning and integration with public services (RFDS, St John, DFES).

FIFO mental health and fatigue

Documented psychosocial risks for FIFO workforces are particularly prevalent in long-cycle Pilbara rosters. Our wellbeing programs target these risks specifically with evidence-based interventions.

Standards we work to in the Pilbara

Pilbara operations sit under multiple regulatory frameworks. We work fluently across:

  • WA WHS Act 2020 and WHS Regulations.
  • WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022.
  • Major Hazard Facility requirements (LNG, gas plants).
  • NOPSEMA Safety Case requirements (offshore interface).
  • Tier 1 operator contractor management frameworks (BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue specific requirements).
  • Pilbara Ports Authority port operating standards.

Mobilisation logistics

We coordinate Pilbara mobilisations through your travel and accommodation desk where required, or independently via Perth-Karratha, Perth-Port Hedland and Perth-Newman commercial flights. Our consultants carry their own PPE and inductions to minimise lead time. We can typically be on the ground at any major Pilbara operation within 24–48 hours subject to flight availability.

/ Frequently Asked

Common questions.

Typically yes, subject to flight availability between Perth and the relevant regional hub (Karratha, Port Hedland, Newman). We carry our PPE and inductions in readiness and can usually be on the ground within 24–48 hours. For very urgent matters we can sometimes mobilise faster via charter.

Yes. A significant portion of our Pilbara work is for principal contractors (drilling, civil, mining services, maintenance, construction) operating on operator sites. We help them meet operator-specific contractor management requirements while running compliant in-house safety systems.
